The organization currently has no employed staff. None of the organization’s directors take any payment or salary from the organization; it is completely volunteer-run.

John M. Grohol, Psy.D. (Greater Boston, MA)
Founder, President, Treasurer

Dr. Grohol is a pioneer in online mental health, publishing the first commercial mental health portal in 1995. Recognizing the educational and social potential of the Internet, Dr. Grohol transformed mental health educational, informational and online support group resources.

During his career, Dr. Grohol has designed and successfully implemented the mental health center for drkoop.com, the website of the former Surgeon General of the United States, C. Everett Koop, M.D. He was the industry’s youngest Chief Operating Officer while at HelpHorizons.com, Inc. and led the firm to its successful sale in January 2006 to Workplace Benefits. In 2001, he created the world’s first mental health social networking community called the Forums @ Psych Central.

Dr. Grohol is the author of The Insider’s Guide to Mental Health Resources Online and a researcher.  He is a founding board member and Treasurer of the Society for Participatory Medicine. Dr. Grohol has chaired and presented at over four dozen symposia about online mental health and psychology at American Psychological Association conventions and for others.

Dr. Grohol was the founder of Psych Central, which he sold to Health in 2020.

Nancy Grohol has a long history in senior development and management positions for numerous nonprofit organizations, including the USS Constitution Museum and the Thoreau Farm Trust.

Dawn Carter (Columbus, OH)

Dawn Carter is long-time member of the Help & Heal Mental Health Fund, since 2007. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Purdue University and her Master’s Degree in Somatics from The Ohio State University. Dawn worked in medical education at The Ohio State University College of Medicine for 12 years, specializing in neurology for 5 years. While at Purdue University she was a course instructor, research assistant and student counselor for at-risk students in the HORIZONS program. She also worked with non-traditional adult students as a night time teaching assistant. Currently, she does freelance work in the mental health field.

Jean Sabau-Hall (Concord, NH)

Jean Sabau-Hall is a long-time member of the Help & Heal Mental Health Fund, since 2005. She has dealt with a variety of mental health issues in her life. She currently is working as a home provider to an individual with developmental disabilities as well as physical disabilities.

Therese Borchard

Therese Borchard is an award-winning author, advocate, depression sufferer, and founder of the Project Beyond Blue community (now called Project Hope & Beyond).

Gabe Howard (Columbus, OH)

Gabe Howard is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. He is the author of the popular book, Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations and host of two podcasts, The Psych Central Podcast and Not Crazy. He is the homepage editor and an associate editor with Psych Central.
